WE'VE ALWAYS HAD WACKY WEATHER

It seems like people today think that the weather used to be so nice but now man-made pollution is up-ending the weather systems. The older I get, the more ridiculous that argument gets.

I remember riding the Greyhound bus home one windy day in 1970. An elderly man sat next to me and began telling me how strange this weather was in comparison to how things were when he was my age. I've heard many similar stories how today's weather isn't like it used to be.

A pattern is forming in my mind about these "wacky weather" reports from various people. Older people seem to forget the bad things in the past, generally speaking that is. This is why everything seems so good long ago.

It also seems to me that our senses diminish as we age. What once was an adventure now is an ordeal. To me, soft ice cream tasted better when I was young and summers were hotter. Now I realize it's just a matter of perspective due to decades of experience.

The leader of the cultic house church I once attended also made some wild predictions about the weather. One of his outlandish claims was that the southwestern United States would be uninhabitable by the turn of the century due to violent storms and earthquakes. Last I've heard, the western states of America are doing quite well. Apocalyptic claims have been made by other false leaders and haven't yet come to pass.

I'm sure the children of today will someday realize that we've had it good during the first decades of the twenty-first century. There will always be storms and quiet years. Winters will vary in length in severity, just as they've always done. The same goes for the other three seasons. Keep in mind that these cycles have happened for millennia and that our tiny contribution of heat is being compensated for by the environment.

My How I Was Razed memoir shows how wrong that rogue leader was with his supposed revelations. Check it out at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Powell's Books.

THE CLIMATE IS ALWAYS CHANGING

I'm astonished at governments and individuals who continue to believe in climate change. Every big storm that comes along is touted as proof that the earth is in peril. The media even get into the act by claiming this or that natural disaster is the worst in history.

The truth is that the climate is always changing. Geology shows this quite clearly. My home in Alberta is located in an area which was once tropical. Dinosaur bones have been dug up for decades in the south end of the province. Coal beds show how lush the vegetation once was.

There was another time when a mile-thick layer of ice covered the continent. During that age, carbon dioxide levels were much higher than today. If this gas, needed by plants for growth, causes a greenhouse effect, why didn't the ice melt?

Even in my short lifetime, I've known of dramatic swings in conditions. In 1958, my mom photographed me sitting on a sled amid melting patches of snow. In December of 1965, I saw that very little snow had fallen in our yard while it had been deeper in previous years. I well remember December of 1976 when the news reported that places in Alaska were warmer than those in Florida. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, people predicted that the next year would be a worse one for storms. It was actually a calm hurricane season.

Moreover, scientists at the International Panel on Climate Change fudged their figures to make the data fit their computer model. Michael Mann became infamous with his "hockey stick" graph. He used tree ring data for dates before 1960 but monitoring stations for the years afterward. In light of the revelations of their forgery, how can we believe their dire predictions?

One well-balanced source of climate information is The Cornwall Alliance. They show how the planet can be managed so that its beauty is preserved while letting humanity flourish. The modern environment movement is oriented toward keeping people from using resources while handing governments more power to regulate the stuffing out of businesses. This approach only brings misery to the masses, especially the poorest of the poor.

I have mentioned my desire to reduce my energy consumption, and the problems doing so caused me, in my When a Man Loves a Rabbit book. It, and my second paperback, is available through the Bruce Atchison's books page.

HOW TO INCREASE CROP YIELDS AND GARDEN FERTILITY.

What would you think of a farmer or gardener who deliberately caused lower crop yields on everybody else's land as well as his or her own? What would you think of a gardener who wanted to confiscate a key growth factor from everybody's yards? That would be a counter-productive action that would hurt the entire population, particularly the poor.

Governments around the world are being coerced into spending billions on rounding up something that helps with plant growth and hiding it underground. Less than a third of a percent of the atmosphere, carbon dioxide is necessary for the growth of plants. It has been in much higher concentrations in the past, yet the planet wasn't destroyed. Life thrived during the age of the dinosaurs because of the richness of plant growth back then. Coal seams testify to the abundance of flora during that age.

As this chart shows, there was a high of 6,000 parts per million of CO2 in our atmosphere around 400-million years ago. The second spike shows an even higher level of this plant-nourishing gas in the atmosphere about 175-million years ago. During those periods, no humans existed. Therefore the high level of CO2 can't be attributed to industrialization.

Scientists say that humanity has been around for only a few million years. CO2 has actually dropped, according to the chart. Even with the industrial revolution, humanity hasn't had much of an effect on the level of CO2 in the air.

Environmentalists claim that the earth is warming. Empirical studies have shown a decline in the earth's temperature since 2000. Additionally, Dr. Michael Mann's "hockey stick" graph has been disprove and its flawed science discredited. Yet environmentalists still claim that the planet is warming. Having noticed how cold the winters in the northern hemisphere have been of late, I know that the climate is cooling.

Environmentalists claim that human activity is killing off many species. The climate is always changing, favouring one type of life form over another. The area where I live today was once tropical. It was also covered with a mile-thick sheet of ice at one time. Having examined the empirical facts and balanced them against the histrionic claims of environmental activists, I conclude that "climate change" is as big a hoax as was Piltdown man.

If this planet had more CO2, plants would grow better and yield more food for humanity. Famines would be greatly reduced and deserts would shrink. Livestock would also flourish because of the availability of plants to feed on. Capturing and storing this life-giving gas because it supposedly causes climate change will harm humanity and the creatures on this planet.
