After I sent the ball rolling down the alley, and it hit a few pins and disappeared, I walked the few steps back to the receptacle to wait for my ball so I could make my second try. This was of course a modern facility with automatic pin-setting mechanisms. Suddenly, a friend laughed and pointed out that instead of coming through the receptacle, my ball had somehow gotten turned around and was rolling up the gutter.
